SEO Price Malaysia 2026: What Each Price Band Actually Buys
SEO in Malaysia costs between roughly RM650 and RM10,000 a month for a single-location business. Across the 10 public agency price lists we checked on 6 September 2026, the cheapest tier per vendor ranged from RM650 to RM3,500, median about RM1,600. What moves you between bands is scope: keywords worked, content, links, Google Business Profile management and hours.
What SEO actually costs in Malaysia in 2026
Malaysian SEO retainers cluster into three price bands, each defined by what gets delivered every month rather than by the agency's name. The entry band sits roughly between RM650 and RM1,500 a month, the local band between RM1,800 and RM3,500, and the growth or authority band between RM4,000 and RM10,000. Enterprise programmes open at around RM12,000 and are scoped case by case.
Of the 10 Malaysian agency price pages we collected on 6 September 2026, five publish a tier at or under RM1,500, nine publish a tier between RM1,800 and RM3,500 (the most crowded band), and four publish a tier at RM4,000 or above. The table summarises what each band typically includes, using the ranges we found rather than any one vendor's list.
| Scope item | Entry band (about RM650–1,500) | Local band (about RM1,800–3,500) | Growth band (about RM4,000–10,000) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Keywords worked each month | 5–20 | 10–40 | 30–120+ |
| Content pieces each month | 0–2 short articles | 1–6 articles | 4–12 long-form pieces |
| Google Business Profile | Set-up only, or not included | Managed profile in most lists | Managed, often multi-location |
| Links and citations | Basic citations or "link building" unspecified | Citations plus a named link quota | Outreach links, digital PR |
| Technical work | One-off audit, 5–10 pages on-page | Audit plus monthly fixes, 10–15 pages | Site-wide, conversion tracking, dev time |
| Reporting | Automated monthly report | Monthly report, sometimes bi-weekly check-ins | Monthly strategy call, senior lead |
| Minimum term | None to 12 months | 6 months typical | 6–12 months |
| Vendors with a tier here | 5 of 10 | 9 of 10 | 4 of 10 |
On terms: six of the 10 state a six-month minimum, two state 12 months, one has no contract and one does not say. A quote without a stated term is not cheaper; it is incomplete.
Entry band, about RM650–1,500 a month: what it buys
The entry band buys a small, mostly local campaign: 5 to 20 keywords, a one-off technical audit with on-page work on five to ten pages, basic citations and, in the better lists, one or two short articles a month. Google Business Profile is usually set up once rather than managed. It suits a business that runs on referrals today and does not appear when someone nearby searches for the service.
Read the entry band carefully, because it has the widest gap between promise and delivery. Among the entry tiers we checked, one vendor works 5 keywords with two blog posts a month for RM800, another lists 15 keywords with on-page work on five pages and no articles for RM650 billed yearly, and a third tracks 20 keywords but names only five as page-one targets.
The entry band is also where guarantees appear. Three of the 10 price lists promise a minimum number of keywords on the first page, always tied to a 12-month term. Google's guidance on whether you need an SEO and how to choose one states that no one can guarantee a number-one ranking. A guarantee is usually funded by picking easy keywords, so the promise is met while the phone stays quiet.
Local band, about RM1,800–3,500 a month: what it buys
The local band buys a two-front campaign for one location: website rankings and the maps pack worked together. Typical scope is 10 to 40 keywords, one to six articles a month, on-page work across 10 to 15 pages, a managed Google Business Profile and a named link or citation quota. Nine of the 10 vendors publish a tier here, so this is the band where you can compare like with like. Within it, the price gap comes down to four line items:
- Keyword count that is actually worked. Tiers near RM1,800 to RM2,300 usually list 10 keywords; tiers near RM3,500 list 30. Two vendors list 60 and 80, which at this price means most of those words receive tracking rather than hours.
- Content volume. The lists range from one 800-word article a month to six blog posts. At one article a month, a 10-keyword campaign takes most of a year to give every keyword its own page.
- Links. Eight of the nine local-band tiers name a link or citation deliverable, but only two state a monthly number. One agency's page notes that links from real Malaysian sites cost RM200 to RM800 each, which is why a RM2,000 retainer cannot include ten of them.
- Google Business Profile management. Set-up is a one-off task; a managed profile means posts, photos, Q&A, spam-listing reports and review alerts every month. Google says local ranking is driven by relevance, distance and prominence and cannot be paid for, so the value is the monthly activity that builds prominence.
Two of the 10 vendors also charge a set-up fee in the first month (RM1,500 to RM2,500 in one list). Add it before comparing. Six-month minimums are the norm here, which is reasonable: local SEO in Johor Bahru, Penang or Selangor compounds, and the businesses that hold the map pack kept their citations, reviews and content moving for a year rather than a quarter.
Growth band, about RM4,000–10,000 a month: what it buys
The growth band buys authority rather than presence: 30 to 120-plus keywords, four to 12 long-form pieces a month, outreach links or digital PR, conversion tracking and a senior person on a monthly strategy call. Four of the 10 vendors publish a tier here, from RM4,000 to RM9,800 a month, with enterprise programmes above RM12,000 quoted separately.
The distinguishing deliverables here are the ones that are expensive to fake: original content other sites want to cite, links earned by outreach rather than bought, and developer hours for speed, structure and landing-page changes. Google's spam policies describe link spam and scaled content abuse, the two shortcuts a growth-band budget is supposed to make unnecessary. If a RM6,000 quote leans on volume (hundreds of keywords, dozens of AI-generated pages), the money is going to the wrong place.
The extra RM2,000 to RM6,000 a month buys the three things that separate "ranked locally" from "recognised across the category": original content, earned links and engineering time. A business that only needs the maps pack in one town will not see a return on it; a business that sells state-wide often will.
The six cost drivers behind any Malaysian SEO quote
Every price in every band traces back to six inputs. Put a number against each and you can compare two quotes that use completely different package names.
- Keywords worked versus keywords tracked. Tracking is a software cost. Working a keyword means research, a page, internal links and periodic rewrites. A price list that gives only one number is hiding which one it is.
- Content: pieces, length and who writes them. Lists in our sample range from zero articles to 12 a month. Ask whether a specialist writer or a junior with a template produces it.
- Links and citations, with a monthly number. "Link building included" without a quantity is a placeholder. Citations are cheap and finite; outreach links are neither.
- Google Business Profile: set-up or managed. The gap between them is most of the gap between the entry and local bands.
- Technical and development hours. An audit is a document. Fixes are hours. Ask whether the retainer implements the fixes or only lists them.
- Term, set-up fee and tax. Six-month minimums, first-month set-up charges and whether the price is before or after service tax all change the true cost. Check the current scope of service tax on the MySST portal rather than assuming the figure is final.
One input is on no price list: competition. A dental clinic in Kuala Lumpur and a workshop in Muar are not the same job at the same keyword count, which is why the more careful agencies in our sample call their bands indicative and quote after seeing the site.
Four things to check before you sign in Malaysia
Price is only the first filter. Before committing, confirm four things that decide whether the money is recoverable if the relationship ends.
Account ownership. Google's guide to Business Profile owners and managers explains that only owners can add or remove people. Your company should be the primary owner and the agency a manager, never the reverse. The same applies to Google Analytics, Search Console and WordPress admin; our website ownership checklist for Malaysia lists every login that should sit in your name.
A registered business on the other side of the invoice. Ask for the SSM registration number and check it. Malaysian suppliers are moving through the staged rollout of LHDN e-Invoice; a vendor that cannot issue a compliant invoice for a 12-month retainer is a warning sign in itself.
What "included" means in writing. Get the recurring monthly deliverable list, not the month-one list. Foundation work happens once; from month two you are paying for the recurring items only, and that is the list that belongs in the contract.
What happens on exit. Content, citations and profile access should remain yours. If the agency hosts your site or holds the domain, read our guide to platform renewals and what you actually own first.
How to compare any Malaysian SEO quote line by line
Put every proposal through the same six questions, in writing. A quote that cannot answer them is not a quote you can compare.
- How many keywords receive real hours each month, and how many are only tracked? Two numbers, not one.
- What is delivered every month after the first? Articles with word count, pages optimised, Google Business Profile activity, links with a number, and the report format.
- Is Google Business Profile management included, and how deep? Set-up once, or posts, photos, Q&A and review alerts every month.
- What is the minimum term, is there a set-up fee, and is the price before or after tax?
- What is excluded? Ads management, video, multi-location coverage and conversion-rate programmes are usually separate. A quote that excludes nothing is either enormous or vague.
- Can you open the dashboard yourself? A rank tracker and Search Console you can log into beat a PDF that arrives when the agency chooses.
Freelancers and agencies answer these questions differently, and neither answer is wrong for every business. Our comparison of freelance web designers versus agencies in Malaysia covers the same trade-off on the build side.
Where SEO fits next to your website budget
SEO spend only pays back if the site it sends traffic to can convert and can be edited. Before committing to a six- or 12-month retainer, check that the site is fast on mobile, the enquiry path works (form and WhatsApp), and you own the domain, hosting and WordPress admin. If any of those fail, fix the site first: a Starter website in Malaysia costs RM1,488 one-off, roughly one month of a local-band retainer.
Our Malaysia web design price guide lays out the build tiers and three-year cost, and Care Plans from RM599 a year keep the site updated and backed up while a campaign runs. The sensible sequence is: build or fix the site, complete Google Business Profile, then start SEO in the band that matches the competition you actually face.
How we quote SEO, and why there is no price list on this page
We do not publish a monthly SEO price, and the reason is in the data above: the same RM2,000 buys three different services depending on the keyword set, the competition in your city and the state of your website. Instead, we start with a free audit and a live keyword map for your area, then quote a scope you can hold us to: keywords worked, content, Google Business Profile activity, links and technical hours, listed month by month, with every account under your own logins. If you want that scope and the number that goes with it, start on our SEO services page for Malaysia or WhatsApp us with your industry and location.
Frequently asked questions
How much does SEO cost per month in Malaysia?
Across the 10 Malaysian agency price lists we checked on 6 September 2026, published tiers ran from RM650 to about RM10,000 a month; the cheapest tier per vendor ranged RM650 to RM3,500, median about RM1,600. Entry campaigns sit under RM1,500, local campaigns between RM1,800 and RM3,500, authority campaigns from RM4,000 upward.
Is the entry price band enough for SEO to work?
It is enough for a maps-first campaign in one area with 5 to 20 long-tail and location keywords, provided they are worked rather than only tracked. It is not enough for national terms or competitive Klang Valley categories, and an entry-band quote that promises 50 keywords is tracking them, not working them.
What is the minimum SEO contract in Malaysia?
Six of the 10 price lists we checked state or recommend a six-month minimum, two require 12 months, one has no contract and one does not say. Six months is the shortest realistic term for local results to show; 12-month terms are common in the growth band.
Does the price include Google Business Profile management?
In the entry band it is usually a one-off set-up or not included. Most local-band and growth-band tiers include a managed profile: regular posts, photos, Q&A, spam-listing reports and review alerts. Confirm which the quote means, and keep your company as the profile's primary owner.
Should I trust an SEO package that guarantees first-page rankings?
Be cautious. Three of the 10 Malaysian price lists we checked attach a first-page guarantee, all in the entry band and tied to a 12-month term. Google's own guidance says no one can guarantee a number-one ranking; guarantees are usually met by choosing easy keywords that bring no enquiries.
What is usually not included in an SEO retainer?
Paid ads management, video production, multi-location or cross-border coverage, A/B testing and conversion-rate programmes, and review-acquisition systems are typically quoted separately. Set-up fees and service tax may also sit outside the headline monthly price.
Should I fix my website before starting SEO?
Usually yes. If the site is slow on mobile, the enquiry form or WhatsApp button does not work, or you do not own the domain, hosting and WordPress admin, fix that first. SEO sends traffic; the site has to convert it.
